Residential Extension, Ailsworth, Peterborough

Residential Extension AilsworthThe clients brief was to create a single storey side and rear extension and open up the ground floor areas of the existing house to facilitate effortless movement between one area and another. Something light and airy with windows and doors that would allow a panoramic view of the fields beyond, and external doors that could be opened up to allow a seamless transition between the new internal spaces and the garden beyond. An elevated internal roof space to the extension to create the impression of height and very modern simple clean lines with the internal finishes.

Externally the extension was to be very modern and to be a distinct contrast to the traditional form of the existing house. Materials would have to include modern timber panelling and colour matched frames for the external windows and doors.

Design for a challenging brief

The brief was therefore challenging but it did offer the opportunity for the design team to explore and express their own creativity to produce a highly unique design. The delivering of such a vision would also require very careful design and attention to detail from the outset, along with a good working relationship between designers, the local authority and the construction team.

In general terms materials were chosen to meet the client brief and to ensure compliance with the building regulations. Due to the high levels of glazing the performance criteria for the glass had to be checked very carefully to ensure that excessive heat losses did not occur from within the new spaces, particularly as the existing ground floor areas were being opened up into the new extension.

Significant structural design work also had to be undertaken to allow existing walls of the house to be taken out and create the free flowing movement that was being sought.

High performance insulation

High performance insulation materials were used within the flat roof and ground floor constructions and the heating system for the existing house was extended into the new spaces, with modern radiators and a feature gas fire included in the new lounge area.

The project is a bold and unique design, incorporating contemporary design components and overall it represents a strong vision of what is possible when considering a domestic extension project. The project met and exceeded the clients expectations.
